Biography

Stephanie Miracle (she/her), Assistant Professor of Dance and current UI Dance Company Artistic Director, is an interdisciplinary choreographer investigating the intersection between dance, cinema and everyday public spaces through creative practices and performances that prioritize accessibility. Originally from Tulsa, OK, she holds an MFA in Dance from the University of Maryland and a BA in Dance from Belhaven University. Her history as professional dancer in NYC and abroad includes performing with Laura Peterson Choreography, Shannon Gillen (VIM VIGOR), David Dorfman Dance, Susan Marshall and Company, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Rodolpho Leoni, Henrietta Horn, Heart Stück Bernie, and Deborah Hay. In 2015 she joined Folkwang Tanzstudio in Essen, Germany as full-time company member and was the company’s 2012/19 choreographer in residence. She continues to perform with Jennifer Kayle, PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER, and Dance Dialogue.

Stephanie’s projects have been presented in Germany, Ireland, Hungary, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC. From 2016 - 2019 she was a guest choreographer for Folkwang Tanzstudio (FTS)  in Essen, Germany. Her work for FTS wilderness tender was described by the Ruhrzeitung as “sixty minutes of pure pleasure”.  She is the founder and artistic director of the international ensemble FAKERS CLUB (2015 - present). This summer the company has been invited to create a new series of site-specific live-cinema performances in Auterive, France this summer. In 2023, her piece SqE8ty6R^y7 (Glitch Code) created with 17 U Iowa students was selected for the ADCA-South Adjudicated Gala concert. Other interdisciplinary projects include MAMMAL HALL - an experimental dance film collaboration with Ramin Roshandel and Auden Lincoln-Vogel made in residence at the Museum of Natural History; Synesthesia - a solo performance involving the interactive motion sensor technologies of Jason Snell; and The Parking Space - a site-specific audio walk through downtown Iowa City that invites rest, activation and imagination into everyday spaces. 

Recent grants and awards include: Fulbright Fellowship to study the lineage of Pina Bausch in Germany (2014/15), Best Duet Barnes Crossing Festival in Cologne (2016), Best Duet SzoloDuo Festival in Budapest (2017), Interdisciplinary Humanities Grant (2018), Trust for Mutual Understanding (2019), Arts Across Borders (2021), Banff Center of Arts and Creativity Online Arts Scholarship (2021), Public Arts Matching Grant (2020 & 2022), Iowa Arts Council Individual Artist Grant (2021/22),  J.J. Neiman-Brown Grant (2022), Stanley International Travel Award (2022), Arts and Humanities Initiative Award (2023) and a  CLAS DSHB Humanities Scholar Award (2024).
