Biography

Jaruam Xavier, a Brazilian dancer, and choreographer, is pursuing a master's degree at the University of Iowa. With extensive experience as a professional dancer, he has performed in various countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, China, Uruguay, the United States, and Brazil. Jaruam's dance works are distinct as they are influenced by anthropophagic arts, which are rooted in Brazilian culture. Traits from Capoeira and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be seen in his choreography, setting it apart from European-based forms.


One of Jaruam's areas of research is dance improvisation, where he explores the spontaneous response to his surroundings to generate movements and enhance communication during his performances. In 2022, he was awarded a Summer Grant to further investigate capoeira in Brazil, and in 2023, he received a Summer Fellowship to further develop his research as a choreographer. These opportunities highlight Jaruam's dedication to his artistic pursuits and his commitment to advancing his knowledge and skills in dance and choreography.
