Coming of Age is a metaphor for a teenage girl's first menstrual period and the different ways in which this bodily process can be embodied as a ritual in a community. Menstruation remains a taboo topic in our society and it is commonly talked about with shame and secrecy, enhancing the idea of womanhood as an unpredictable “mystery”.
