Department of Dance Community Agreement

As members of the University of Iowa Department of Dance community, we, as dance makers, students, faculty, and staff, agree to the following in an effort to build a cooperative and supportive environment for the creation and innovation of dance works:

1. We agree to carefully read and review all Department of Dance and Division of Performing Arts policies and guidelines that are linked below.

2. We agree to obtain licensing for music that is being used in works for all performances. Additional information about copyright and licensing is available here. Dance makers are encouraged to begin the music selection process early, as licensing can often take several months.

3. We agree to attend weekly Wednesday production meetings as outlined below:

  • The Director of Dance production agrees to attend all production meetings.
  • Directors of Dance Gala and UI Dance Company agree to attend all production meetings for their respective productions.
  • Dance makers creating works for Dance Gala agree to attend all production meetings. Once all aspects related to their works have been discussed with the production team, they are welcome to leave the meeting.
  • Dance makers creating works for UI Dance Company agree to attend production meetings at the discretion of the company directors.
  • The Thesis Production Supervisor agrees to attend thesis production meetings at the discretion (or request) of the thesis candidates.
  • Dance makers creating works for other Department of Dance concerts agree to attend all production meetings arranged through the Production Stage Manager on an as-needed basis.
  • We agree to inform the team and submit any comments or questions in advance of the meeting if we are unable to attend.
  • We agree to review meeting minutes and answer any questions that have come up pertaining to our work or to the production as a whole.

At the beginning of each semester, the Production Stage Manager agrees to work with faculty, staff, and students to set a schedule for the weekly Wednesday production meetings to best accommodate the schedules of all involved. In the event that a time cannot be found that works for everyone, a rotating schedule will be implemented.

4. We agree to attend post-rehearsal production meetings at the discretion of the production director.

5. We agree to respond to emails and requests for information in a timely and professional manner.

6. We agree to collaborate/cooperate with all artistic team members inclusive of all dance makers and the production team to make reasonable adaptations or adjustments based on the needs of the production as a whole.

7. We agree to meet and respect all deadlines set for for the production. A complete list of deadlines will be shared by the production team at the beginning of the process for all productions. We agree to communicate with the appropriate contact if we have questions or require a reasonable deadline extension. The production team and staff will work with dance makers to accommodate timely requests for extensions.

8. We agree to sign the Department of Dance Community Agreement, acknowledging that we have familiarized ourselves with the department's policies and guidelines and will do our best to observe them as dance makers and, when applicable, when serving as an advisor for student works.

Repeated failure to observe departmental policies and guidelines or the community agreement, will require a meeting with the department executive officer (DEO) and director of dance production (DOD) to review the event(s). As part of this formal conversation, the DEO and DOD will determine a course of action to address these issues. Following this meeting, continued failure to reasonably observe policies, guidelines, and the agreement may impact participation as a dance maker in future productions.

Questions regarding the Dance Community Agreement may be directed to Armando Duarte, director of dance production at armando-duarte@uiowa.edu.
